Mexico is one of the most popular holiday destinations among Germans. From the Pacific to the Caribbean, from bizarre deserts to the rain forests in the jungle areas, from plateaus to snow-covered volcanoes – its incredible diversity of landscapes makes Mexico a highly attractive destination.
 
Many travelers see Mexico’s fantastic beaches as a special asset. The Sea of Cortés, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean offer tourists ten thousand kilometers (over 6,000 miles) of beaches with crystal clear water warm enough to allow swimming the whole year round. The second-longest coral reef in the world, off the island of Cozumel, is a jewel and is not for nothing considered one of the most beautiful diving areas in the world. And Mexico is worth your money above the water, too, e.g., when it comes to whale-watching along the Baja California peninsula. Some 35 percent of all whale species worldwide are living in those waters. About 200 km (125 mi.) south of Acapulco lies the Laguna de Chacaqua National Park, which is home to the rare sea turtles. A must for bird lovers is the Río Lagartos National Preserve in the north of the Yucatan peninsula. Tourists have a good chance here to catch sight of the pink flamingoes; these birds, which usually are very shy, are living in many colonies here.

Did we arouse your curiosity? The natural spectacles Mexico has to offer are by no means limited to these paradises. In the federal state of Chihuahua, for instance, tours through the Copper Canyon, which is four times as large as the Grand Canyon in the USA, are an unforgettable experience. Mountain ranges and volcanoes await passionate hikers and climbers in Colima, Central Mexico or Chiapas - e.g., the snow-covered Pico de Orizaba, at more than 5,600 m (more than 18,400 ft.) the highest mountain in Mexico and only about 3 hours’ driving from Mexico City. The lonely deserts, particularly in the Baja California, are another of the Mexican wonders of nature that astound travelers. The country of one thousand worlds includes 60 to 70 percent of the ecosystems in the world. 

The rich cultural heritage is certainly one of the highlights of this multifaceted country. Over 11,000 excavation sites of Mayan, Aztec, Olmec and Toltec places can be visited. Be it temples, ball courts or ruins of old palaces, they continue to be fascinating even after 1,500 years.
